Campervanning in Spain — Overnight Parking vs Camping, Áreas de Autocaravanas and Low-Emission Zones in 2027
Spain is one of the easiest countries in Europe for a campervan: it has thousands of dedicated motorhome stops, mild winters in the south and good roads. Even so, many visitors get fined because they do not know the difference between parking and camping, or because they drive into a city low-emission zone. These are the rules that apply across the country, and we also have separate guides for individual cities.
Parking is not camping
- The national rule. Under an instruction from the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT, Instrucción 08/V-74 of 2008), a campervan may park anywhere a car may park, with the same time limits, and you may sleep inside it.
- What counts as camping. The vehicle must rest only on its wheels. As soon as you put out the awning, set up chairs and a table, open windows that stick out beyond the vehicle, use levelling ramps or let water out, that is camping, which is only allowed at a campsite or a place set aside for it.
- Municipal rules. Municipalities can ban campervans from staying overnight in certain streets or next to beaches through local bylaws, so watch the signs. Many coastal car parks have a motorhome ban or a height barrier.
- Wild camping. In most autonomous communities wild camping is banned, especially in protected areas and on the coast, where it is also restricted by the coastal law (Ley de Costas). Fines vary from place to place and can be high.
Áreas de autocaravanas
- What they are. These are dedicated motorhome stops, often set up by the municipality. They have a point for filling with water and emptying tanks, and some also have electricity.
- Price and stay. Many are free, and the rest cost roughly 5 to 15 euros a night. Stays are often limited to 48 or 72 hours.
- How to find them. The most widely used apps are Park4night and Caramaps, where users also leave ratings and photos. At popular seaside spots, arrive before mid-afternoon.
- Private áreas. Besides municipal ones there are private áreas with security, showers and laundry, priced between an área and a campsite.
Campsites
- When they are the better choice. If you want the awning out, a table outside, power for the air conditioning or a secure place for bikes, go to a campsite. You can also stay longer there.
- Prices and discounts. Out of season, many campsites give discounts with the ACSI card or similar, and in the south they stay open in winter and fill with long-stay guests from northern Europe, so book then too.
- Summer. In July and August coastal campsites are full and expensive; book early or head inland.
Low-emission zones (ZBE)
- Where they are. Municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants have to introduce a low-emission zone (zona de bajas emisiones), but each city sets its own rules, so they vary a lot.
- The environmental label. Access depends on the DGT label (0, ECO, C or B). Campervans registered in Spain, including rental ones, have a label, so they can usually enter most zones.
- Madrid. The low-emission zone covers the whole city, and vehicles without a label may not enter. In the centre and a few smaller zones the rules are stricter still, so an older campervan without a label is left on the edge of the city.
- Barcelona. The Rondes zone applies on weekdays from 7 am to 8 pm. Foreign-registered vehicles must register in advance on the metropolitan area's platform, or they will be fined.
- Tip. Before entering a city, check the rules on the city's website, and for sightseeing leave the campervan at a car park near public transport.
Roads, tolls and speed
- Tolls. Since 2020 and 2021 a large part of the motorway network is no longer tolled, including the long AP-7 along the coast, but some sections still charge tolls.
- Speed limits. For motorhomes up to 3,500 kg the limit is 120 km/h on motorways and 90 km/h on other roads; heavier vehicles have lower limits.
- Planning. The south is best from October to May; summer inland is very hot, and the coast is crowded.

Frequently Asked Questions
May I sleep in a campervan in a car park in Spain?
Yes, if a car may park there and you are not breaking a municipal ban. The vehicle must rest only on its wheels: an awning, chairs, levelling ramps or letting water out already count as camping.
What are áreas de autocaravanas and how much do they cost?
They are dedicated motorhome stops with water filling and tank emptying, and some also have electricity. Many are free, the rest cost roughly 5 to 15 euros a night, and stays are often limited to 48 or 72 hours.
Is wild camping allowed in Spain?
In most autonomous communities it is not, especially in protected areas and on beaches, where the coastal law also restricts it. Fines vary from place to place, so use áreas and campsites.
Can I drive a campervan into the low-emission zone in Madrid or Barcelona?
Campervans registered in Spain, including rental ones, have an environmental label and can usually enter. Vehicles without a label may not enter Madrid, and foreign-registered vehicles must register in advance for Barcelona.
