Campervan Hire Tauranga — Mount Maunganui, Rotorua, Coromandel, Hobbiton and Tips for 2027
Tauranga, the largest city in the Bay of Plenty, lies on a large harbour on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, sheltered by Matakana Island and the volcanic cone of Mount Maunganui. It is one of the sunniest places in the country and a good base for a campervan trip: surf beaches on its doorstep, the geothermal valleys of Rotorua an hour away, Hobbiton in Matamata and the Coromandel Peninsula to the north. This guide explains where to go, where you can stay overnight, what to know about driving and when it is best to travel.
Tauranga and Mount Maunganui
The walk to the top of Mauao, as Mount Maunganui is known in Māori, takes about 45 minutes and gives views over the harbour, the port and the long ocean beach. At its foot are Main Beach, popular with surfers, and hot saltwater pools for the evening. Across the harbour bridge, Tauranga's waterfront and The Strand have cafés, a weekend market and a seaside promenade. In summer, parking at the Mount is scarce, so arrive early with a larger vehicle.
Day trips
- McLaren Falls Park (about 15 km): a lake, waterfalls and walking tracks in the Kaimai foothills, with glow-worms in the bush after dark and a campground.
- Rotorua (about 60 km): geysers and boiling mud at Te Puia and Wai-O-Tapu, Māori culture, the Redwoods forest and mountain-bike trails, plus several lakes.
- Hobbiton (about 65 km): the film set from The Lord of the Rings in the farmland near Matamata; visits must be booked in advance.
- Te Puke and the coast to Whakatāne (25–95 km): kiwifruit orchards, the long sandy beaches of Pukehina and Matatā, and Ōhope Beach near Whakatāne.
Longer routes
North of Tauranga, the Coromandel Peninsula offers Waihi Beach, Hot Water Beach, where you can dig your own hot pool at low tide, and the coastal walk to Cathedral Cove. To the east, the road around the East Cape (SH35) from Ōpōtiki to Gisborne is remote and beautiful, with small Māori communities and few services, so plan fuel and supplies. From Rotorua it is about an hour on to Lake Taupō and the Tongariro National Park.

Where to stay
- Holiday parks: in Tauranga, at the foot of Mount Maunganui and along the coast, with power, showers and dump stations; book ahead from Christmas to the end of January.
- Council and DOC campsites: McLaren Falls Park and Department of Conservation sites in the Kaimai Range and the Coromandel, often simple but in beautiful settings.
- Freedom camping: on council land only in certified self-contained vehicles and only at designated sites; fines apply for camping in the wrong place.
- Dump stations: there are public dump stations in Tauranga and the surrounding towns; never empty waste water anywhere else.
Driving tips
- Drive on the left. Take extra care at roundabouts and when turning, especially on the first days.
- Toll roads. The Tauranga Eastern Link and Takitimu Drive are tolled; pay online within a few days or ask the rental company how it is charged.
- Kaimai Range. The road over the Kaimai Range towards Matamata (SH29) is winding and busy with trucks; use the slow-vehicle bays to let traffic pass.
- Narrow roads. Coastal roads on the Coromandel and the East Cape are narrow and winding, with one-lane bridges; trips take longer than the distances suggest.
- Fuel. Petrol stations are far apart on the East Cape; fill up in Ōpōtiki or Gisborne.
When to go
- December to March: summer, with warm days of around 22–25 °C, the best time for the beaches and the busiest period, especially around Christmas and New Year.
- March to May: autumn, calmer roads, still warm sea and good weather for walking.
- June to August: winter, mild by the coast but wetter; it is a good season for Rotorua's hot pools.
- September to November: spring with changeable weather, blossom in the orchards and fewer visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I stay overnight with a campervan in Tauranga?
The main options are holiday parks, including one at the foot of Mount Maunganui, council and DOC campsites such as McLaren Falls Park, and freedom camping at designated sites. On council land, freedom camping is only allowed in certified self-contained vehicles and only where the local bylaw permits it, so check the signs and the council map.
Are there toll roads around Tauranga?
Yes. The Tauranga Eastern Link towards Te Puke and Takitimu Drive in the city are toll roads. There are no toll booths: you pay online by registration number within a few days, or the rental company charges you later, often with an admin fee.
How far is Rotorua from Tauranga?
About 60 km, or roughly an hour's drive. Rotorua's geothermal parks, such as Te Puia and Wai-O-Tapu, the Redwoods forest and the lakes make an easy day trip, or a first overnight stop on a longer loop of the North Island.
When is the best time for a campervan trip from Tauranga?
December to March is summer, with warm days of around 22–25 °C and the beaches at their best, but it is also the busiest time. March and April are calmer and still warm, while winter (June to August) is mild by the coast, around 15 °C, but wetter.
