Campervan Rental Pompano Beach, Florida — Hillsboro Lighthouse, Boca Raton, the Palm Beaches, Jupiter, Lake Okeechobee and Tips for 2027

Pompano Beach lies on Florida's Atlantic coast between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, and takes its name from the pompano, a fish that local fishermen caught here more than a century ago. Today it has a long, wide beach, a new fishing pier with a promenade and the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse, one of the strongest lights on the American coast, which has guided ships since 1907. For a campervan trip it is a convenient base north of the big city: Boca Raton, Delray Beach and the Palm Beaches are within an hour, Jupiter and its quieter beaches a little further, and inland the wide Lake Okeechobee and the northern edge of the Everglades. This guide explains where to go, where you can stay overnight, what to know about driving and when it is best to travel.

Pompano Beach itself

The beach stretches for several kilometres, and the rebuilt Pompano Beach Pier, with its fishing deck, restaurants and the new beachfront promenade, is the centre of town life by the sea. To the north, the Hillsboro Inlet connects the Intracoastal Waterway with the ocean, and the lighthouse can be seen from the beach and from boat tours. The coral reef lies close to the shore, so snorkelling and diving trips leave from the town and from neighbouring Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.

North: Boca Raton, Delray Beach and the Palm Beaches

  • Deerfield Beach (about 8 km): a relaxed beach with its own fishing pier and a lively promenade.
  • Boca Raton (about 15 km): Red Reef Park and its snorkelling reef, and the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center with its sea turtle hospital and boardwalks through the mangroves.
  • Delray Beach (about 25 km): Atlantic Avenue with its restaurants and galleries leading to the beach, and inland the Morikami Japanese gardens and museum.
  • Palm Beach and West Palm Beach (about 55 km): Worth Avenue, the Flagler Museum in the Gilded Age mansion Whitehall, and the Lake Trail cycle path along the Lake Worth Lagoon.
  • Jupiter (about 85 km): the red Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, the dramatic limestone shore of Blowing Rocks Preserve and the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach.

Inland: Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades

Lake Okeechobee (about 110 km), the largest freshwater lake in Florida, is surrounded by the Herbert Hoover Dike, along which runs a long scenic trail for cycling and walking, and the small towns of Pahokee and Clewiston have marinas, fishing and quiet campgrounds. Closer to the coast, the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge (about 45 km) is the northern edge of the Everglades, with boardwalks, alligators and birds.

Where to stay

  • RV resorts: in Pompano Beach and in the neighbouring towns, with full hook-ups, pools and laundry; book ahead from December to April, when many winter visitors from the north stay for weeks.
  • County parks: John Prince Park near Lake Worth has a campground by the lake, a good base for the Palm Beaches.
  • State parks: Jonathan Dickinson State Park near Jupiter has campgrounds in a wild landscape of pine forests and the Loxahatchee River.
  • Lake Okeechobee: RV parks and campgrounds around the lake are quieter and cheaper than those on the coast.
  • Overnight parking: sleeping in a vehicle on streets, in beach car parks or in parks is generally not allowed.

Driving tips

  • A1A and drawbridges. The coast road is slow and narrow in places, and bridges over the Intracoastal open regularly for boats; allow extra time.
  • Tolls. Florida's Turnpike and the express lanes on I-95 have cashless tolls; ask your rental company how they are charged.
  • Parking. Beach car parks are often small and have height limits; look for larger car parks or arrive early.
  • Storms. Afternoon thunderstorms in summer bring heavy rain and poor visibility; slow down and do not drive through flooded streets.
  • Hurricanes. From June to November, keep an eye on the forecast and always follow evacuation orders for the coast.

When to go

  • November to April: dry and sunny, with daytime temperatures of around 22–27 °C, the best time for beaches, nature and camping, but also the busiest and most expensive.
  • May and October: warmer and quieter, with good prices; the sea is already warm.
  • June to September: hot (often above 32 °C) and humid, with almost daily afternoon thunderstorms; this is also the sea turtle nesting season.
  • Hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking from August to October.

A1A is a beautiful drive along the beaches, but it is often a narrow two-lane road with traffic lights, pedestrians and low speed limits, and drawbridges over the Intracoastal Waterway open regularly for boats.
