Campervan Rental Hollywood, Florida — the Broadwalk, Miami, the Florida Keys, the Everglades and Tips for 2027
Hollywood lies on Florida's Atlantic coast between Fort Lauderdale and Miami, with a long beach and a 4 km seafront promenade, the Broadwalk, lined with cafés and small hotels. For a campervan trip it is a relaxed alternative to staying in Miami, and the perfect start for the road south: Miami's neighbourhoods are half an hour away, Biscayne and Everglades national parks lie beyond Homestead, and the Overseas Highway leads island by island to Key West. This guide explains where to go, where you can stay overnight, what to know about driving and when it is best to travel.
Hollywood itself
The Broadwalk is car-free and made for walking, cycling and evening sunsets over the Intracoastal Waterway. Inland, the Anne Kolb Nature Center at West Lake Park protects a large area of mangroves, with boardwalks, an observation tower and kayak trails. Around Young Circle, the ArtsPark hosts concerts and markets, and to the west the Seminole Hard Rock complex is hard to miss. Many beach car parks have height limits, so with a taller campervan look for open lots.
South: Miami and the national parks
- Miami (about 30 km): Wynwood's murals, Little Havana and the Art Deco buildings of South Beach. Parking is expensive and tight, so leave the campervan outside the centre and use public transport or a ride-share.
- Biscayne National Park (about 70 km): a park that is 95 per cent water, with mangroves, coral reefs and boat trips from the visitor centre at Convoy Point near Homestead.
- Everglades National Park (about 80 km to the Homestead entrance): the Anhinga Trail at Royal Palm, with alligators and wading birds, and a 60 km road through the sawgrass to Flamingo on Florida Bay, with a campground and boat tours.
The Overseas Highway to Key West
From Florida City, US-1 crosses the Keys: Key Largo with John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Islamorada and its fishing harbours, Marathon and the Seven Mile Bridge, the white beach of Bahia Honda and finally Key West, about 260 km from Hollywood. Speed limits are low, traffic can be slow and the bridges are exposed to wind, so plan two or three days and book campgrounds well in advance.

Where to stay
- T.Y. Park: a large county park in Hollywood with an RV campground, lakes and cycle paths, close to the beach and the airport.
- Larry and Penny Thompson Park: a county campground south of Miami, a good base for the national parks.
- National parks: the Flamingo campground in the Everglades has sites near Florida Bay; book ahead in winter.
- Florida Keys state parks: John Pennekamp, Long Key, Curry Hammock and Bahia Honda have sought-after campgrounds that can be booked up to 11 months ahead.
- Overnight parking: sleeping in a vehicle on streets, in beach car parks or in parks is generally not allowed, and in the Keys it is prohibited outside campgrounds.
Driving tips
- Tolls. The Florida Turnpike and some Miami expressways use cashless tolls; check with your rental company how they are charged.
- Overseas Highway. US-1 through the Keys is mostly two lanes, with low speed limits, many bridges and slow traffic at weekends; overtake only where it is clearly allowed.
- Wind. Long bridges are exposed to crosswinds; drive carefully with a high-sided vehicle.
- Wildlife. Watch for Key deer on Big Pine Key, where speed limits are lower, and for alligators and birds on Everglades roads.
- Hurricanes. From June to November, keep an eye on the forecast and always follow evacuation orders, especially in the Keys.
When to go
- November to April: dry, sunny and warm, the best time for the Keys and the Everglades, with fewer mosquitoes. This is also high season, so book campgrounds early.
- May to October: hot (often above 32 °C) and humid, with almost daily afternoon thunderstorms; the sea is very warm and the Keys are quieter.
- Hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking from August to October.
