Campervan and RV Rental Orlando — Florida Springs, Space Coast, the Gulf and Tips for 2027
Orlando is known for its theme parks, but with a campervan it is also an excellent base for something quite different: freshwater springs with manatees, the Space Coast with its rocket launches and the beaches on both coasts, each about an hour away. Rental depots are around the airport and in Kissimmee. This guide covers routes, tolls and the rules guests meet most often. For general advice on renting in the United States, see our guide for European visitors. The state's southern drive is covered in our guide to campervan rental in Miami.
Routes from Orlando
- Florida springs: Wekiwa Springs State Park is a short drive from the city, with crystal-clear water and paddling. Blue Spring State Park (about 60 km north) is the place to see manatees in winter. Silver Springs, near Ocala (about 120 km), is known for glass-bottom boat tours and kayaking.
- Kennedy Space Center (about 90 km, an hour): the visitor complex, with rocket displays and launch viewing. Cocoa Beach is a little further along the coast.
- The Atlantic coast: Cocoa Beach and the Canaveral National Seashore, about an hour from Orlando, with long beaches.
- The Gulf coast (Tampa about 135 km, an hour and a half): white-sand beaches around Clearwater and St Petersburg; see our guide to campervan rental in Tampa.
- Florida Keys (about 660 km to Key West): a classic drive, best planned as a separate trip.
Where to stay overnight
- Disney's Fort Wilderness. A large campground inside the Disney property, with full hookups and transport to the parks. Book early for peak dates.
- Private RV parks and resorts. Many have full hookups, and some are close to the parks. In winter a night often costs more than US$100.
- State parks. Reservations open up to eleven months ahead, and winter dates are gone within minutes. They are the cheapest and best located for the springs.
- No wild camping. Sleeping in a vehicle on streets, at the beach or in theme park car parks is generally prohibited and fined.
Driving and costs that guests forget
- Tolls. Central Florida has many toll roads, such as SR 528 and the Turnpike, which are paid electronically with no booths. The rental company bills the toll afterwards, usually with a daily fee. Ask how the toll device works before you drive off.
- Traffic. I-4 is congested at rush hours and near the theme parks. Toll roads are often a faster alternative.
- Vehicle size. A typical American Class C motorhome is seven to nine metres long and more than three and a half metres high. A smaller campervan is easier to park at springs and beaches. Watch out for petrol station canopies and low branches.
- Mileage and generator. American rental companies often charge separately for miles above the included allowance and for generator hours. Read the quote to the end.
When to go
The dry season runs from November to April: days of 22 to 28 °C, dry air and few mosquitoes. It is also the high season, with the highest prices and busy theme parks around the holidays. Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, peaking from August to October; summers are hot and humid with storms almost every afternoon. November and late April are a good compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you park a campervan at the Orlando theme parks?
Theme park car parks are not made for overnight stays, and sleeping in a vehicle there is not allowed. Stay at a campground, for example Disney's Fort Wilderness, or a private RV park, and go to the parks by shuttle or taxi.
How far is Kennedy Space Center from Orlando?
About 90 km (56 miles) east on the toll road SR 528, roughly an hour's drive. It makes an easy day trip and can be combined with Cocoa Beach.
Where can you see manatees near Orlando?
In winter, from about November to March, manatees gather in the warm water of springs such as Blue Spring State Park, about 60 km north of Orlando. Outside this period they leave the springs.
When is the best time for a campervan trip from Orlando?
From November to April: dry, mild and with the fewest mosquitoes, but the highest prices. Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and summers are hot and humid with storms almost every afternoon.
