Campervan and RV Rental San Francisco — Highway 1, Yosemite, Napa and Tips for 2027

San Francisco is a good starting point for a campervan trip: within a few hours you can be among redwoods, on the Pacific coast, in wine country or in the Sierra Nevada. The city itself is not made for large vehicles. Streets are steep and narrow, parking garages have height limits and sleeping in a vehicle is restricted, so pick the campervan up when you are leaving town. This guide covers routes, reservations and the rules guests meet most often. For general advice on renting in the United States, see our guide for European visitors.

Routes from San Francisco

  • Muir Woods and Marin (about 20 km): ancient redwoods just across the Golden Gate Bridge. Parking and the shuttle must be reserved in advance, and larger vehicles have restrictions and a time limit, so check the national park website first.
  • Point Reyes (about 60 km, an hour and a half): a wild peninsula with lighthouse, beaches and elephant seals in winter.
  • Napa and Sonoma (about 80 km): the wine regions; many wineries have parking, but narrow lanes are awkward for a large vehicle.
  • Highway 1 south to Monterey (about 200 km) and Big Sur (about 270 km): one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world. Landslides sometimes close sections, so check the Caltrans QuickMap.
  • Yosemite (about 300 km, four to five hours): waterfalls, granite walls and giant sequoias. Entry rules change from year to year; for 2026 the park announced no timed-entry system, but check before you travel. Campgrounds set RV length limits, from about 24 to 40 feet, and Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road have their own limits on long vehicles.
  • Lake Tahoe (about 320 km, four hours): an alpine lake, with campgrounds in summer.

Where to stay overnight

  • State parks and national park campgrounds. They are the best located. Reservations are made online months ahead, and popular dates in summer go within minutes.
  • Private RV parks. They have full hookups: electricity, water and sewer. Near the Bay Area a night often costs more than US$100.
  • In the Bay Area. There are few campgrounds close to the city, so most travellers sleep outside it, in Marin, on the coast or on the way to Yosemite.
  • No wild camping. Sleeping in a vehicle on the street, at a viewpoint or in a car park is restricted and fined.

Driving and costs that guests forget

  • Hills and bridges. The streets of San Francisco are steep; avoid driving a large vehicle through the centre. The bridges around the Bay are tolled electronically, and the rental company bills the toll afterwards, usually with a fee.
  • Vehicle size. A typical American Class C motorhome is seven to nine metres long and more than three and a half metres high. A smaller campervan is easier on Highway 1 and in the parks, where many roads and campgrounds limit length.
  • Mileage and generator. American rental companies often charge separately for miles above the included allowance and for generator hours. Read the quote to the end.
  • Mountain roads. Tioga Road in Yosemite is closed in winter, usually from November until late spring. In winter, chains may be required on mountain roads.

When to go

September and October have the most settled weather, with little fog and fewer crowds. May and June suit Yosemite, when the waterfalls are at their strongest. Summer in San Francisco itself is cool and often foggy, while the Central Valley and the mountains are hot. In late summer and autumn, smoke and wildfire closures are possible. Winter is rainy on the coast and snowy in the mountains.
