Campervan Hire Sydney — Routes, Campgrounds and Tips for 2027
Sydney is the most common starting point for a campervan trip along Australia's east coast. Most hire depots sit south of the centre, near the airport, so within an hour's drive you are already in a national park or on the coast road. The city itself is no place for a campervan: parking is expensive, car parks have height limits, and sleeping in a vehicle on the street is banned in most council areas. A campervan starts paying off the moment you leave town.
Three routes for the first few days
Grand Pacific Drive and Jervis Bay (south). The coast road runs for about 140 km, starting in Royal National Park an hour south of the centre and crossing the Sea Cliff Bridge to Wollongong and Kiama. Carry on for roughly another hour and a half and you reach Jervis Bay, with the white sand of Hyams Beach and the campgrounds of Booderee National Park. Sydney to Jervis Bay is about 200 km, or three hours of driving without stops.
Blue Mountains (west). Katoomba and the Echo Point lookout over the Three Sisters are about 100 km away, an hour and a half to two hours by road. That is close enough for a two-day trip, and nights are cool even in summer.
Pacific Highway to Byron Bay (north). Port Stephens is the first stop, about 200 km and two and a half hours from the city. Byron Bay is about 770 km away and Brisbane about 920 km. Allow at least five to seven days for that stretch, because the stops are the point: Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Yamba.
Where to stay overnight
In and around Sydney, plan on holiday parks: campgrounds with powered sites, amenities blocks and a laundry. The closest to the centre are in Lane Cove National Park and on the Northern Beaches near Narrabeen. Campgrounds in New South Wales national parks are cheaper and better located, but a site has to be booked online in advance. Free overnight stops by the road are allowed only at signposted rest areas and depend on the council; fines are common along the coast, so read the signs before you switch off the engine.
Driving and the costs visitors forget
- Left-hand side. Australia drives on the left. Plan a short leg for the first day.
- Tolls. Sydney's motorways are tolled electronically only, with no booths. A hire campervan usually carries a tag and the tolls are charged afterwards, often with a processing fee. Ask how much at pick-up.
- Driving licence. A foreign licence in English is valid. If yours is not in English, bring an international driving permit or an official translation.
- Vehicle height. High-top campervans do not fit in most car parks or under some service station canopies. Memorise your vehicle's height at pick-up.
When to go
Spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) are the most comfortable: days are warm and campgrounds are not full. Summer, from December to February, is peak season. During the school holidays from mid-December to late January, coastal holiday parks book out months ahead and hire rates are at their highest. Winter in Sydney is mild, but in the Blue Mountains the temperature drops close to zero at night.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sleep in a campervan on the street in Sydney?
In most council areas, no. Sleeping in a vehicle on the street or in beachside car parks is banned or restricted, and fines are common. Plan on a holiday park or a national park campground.
How many days does a campervan trip from Sydney to Brisbane take?
The distance is about 920 km. It can be driven in two days, but for a trip with stops in Port Stephens, Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay, allow five to seven days.
Do I need an international driving permit to hire a campervan in Australia?
If your licence is in English, it is enough on its own. If it is not, you need an international driving permit or an official English translation with it. Hire companies also set a minimum driver age, most often 21, and 18 with some.
How do you pay tolls in Sydney?
Electronically only. There are no toll booths on the motorways, so the vehicle needs a tag or a registered pass. With a hire campervan, tolls are usually charged to your card after you return the vehicle.
