Boat Rental Milna, Brač — 2027 Guide: Split Gate, Šolta, the Pakleni Islands and Boats from €110

Milna lies at the western end of Brač, at the head of a deep, well-sheltered bay facing Šolta. Because of that bay it was for centuries a harbour where ships waited out bad weather, and today it is one of the main nautical bases of central Dalmatia: it has ACI Marina Milna and Marina Vlaška, and the baroque Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation (Gospa od Blagovijesti) rises above the waterfront. Unlike Supetar and Bol, Milna sits right at the entrance to the Split Gate (Splitska vrata), so Šolta, the Pakleni Islands and Hvar are closer from here than from any other place on Brač. This guide explains where you sail from Milna, how long it takes and which boat from our offer suits which route.

How to get to Milna

  • By the Split–Supetar ferry (about 50 minutes), then by road to Milna, about 20 km and a 25-minute drive.
  • By catamaran from Split: in season a catamaran line calls directly at Milna. The timetable changes from year to year, so check it with the operator before you travel.
  • By sea from Split: Milna is about 10 NM from Split harbour.

If you arrive by ferry in Supetar and want to stay there, see our guide to boat rental in Supetar.

Routes from Milna

Distances are approximate, measured from the entrance to Milna bay. A fast speedboat (25–30 knots) covers 10 NM in 20–25 minutes; a small 8 hp RIB needs about two hours for the same, so it stays along the coast of Brač.

  • Coves of western Brač (2–3 NM). South of Milna are Osibova and Lučice, an indented bay with several smaller arms, pine woods and calm water for swimming. To the north is Bobovišća, a narrow bay with the small village of Bobovišća na Moru. This is the route for the first day and for the smallest boats.
  • The Split Gate and Šolta (2 NM to the passage, about 6 NM to Nečujam). The Split Gate is the narrow passage between Brač and Šolta. On the other side is Nečujam, a large bay on the north side of Šolta with several smaller coves for swimming and anchoring. Further west, about 12 NM from Milna, is Maslinica with the islets in front of the village and Šešula bay.
  • The Pakleni Islands and Hvar (about 10 NM across the Hvar Channel). The Pakleni Islands lie in front of Hvar town; Palmižana on Sveti Klement has beaches, restaurants and mooring buoys, and the smaller coves between the islets are calmer in the morning. Hvar town is right next to them. For this crossing take a speedboat or a motorboat, not a small RIB.
  • Bol and Zlatni Rat along the south side (about 13 NM). The route follows the south coast of Brač, past steep cliffs and coves that are hard to reach by land, all the way to Bol. How to visit Zlatni Rat from the sea and where to anchor is covered in our article Zlatni Rat from the sea.
  • Vis (about 20 NM). For a full day, only with a larger boat and in calm sea.

Which boat for which route

The Milna page currently has nine boats, from €110 to €385 a day. Some of them:

  • VEN 501: a 4.95 m RIB with an 8 hp engine, up to 6 people, €110 a day with 12 litres of fuel. According to the listing it can be driven without a licence. For the coves around Milna.
  • ELAN 20 CC: a 6 m speedboat, Honda 150 hp, up to 5 people, €209 a day, fuel not included. For a couple or a small family heading to Šolta or Hvar.
  • Galia 630 Open: 6 m, with a cabin, up to 8 people, €297 a day, from Marina Vlaška. It has a freshwater shower, a bimini and an electric anchor windlass.
  • Saver 690 Open: 7 m, Yamaha 225 hp, up to 12 people, €352 a day, also from Marina Vlaška. The best choice for a larger group that wants to reach the Pakleni Islands or Bol.

The same page also lists the Cap Camarat (up to 10 people, €385), the Atlantic Sun Cruiser 655 (up to 7 people, €330) and the VEN 501 AS (up to 6 people, €187 with 40 litres of fuel).

Licence, skipper and what is included

  • Licence. According to the listings, only the VEN 501 can be driven without a licence. All the others require a valid boat licence or a skipper.
  • Skipper. On the boats from Marina Vlaška a skipper costs an extra €120 a day; for the other boats the owner confirms skipper availability and price.
  • Fuel and deposit. Fuel is included only on the VEN 501 and VEN 501 AS RIBs, up to the stated amount. For self-drive rental of the boats from Marina Vlaška a €300 deposit is left.
  • Anchoring. In some coves, especially on the Pakleni Islands, mooring buoys or anchoring are charged. Check the amount on the spot or ask the owner.

Winds and season

  • The maestral blows from the northwest from midday until evening and can raise a short chop in the Split Gate. Plan crossings to Hvar and Šolta for the morning and the return before late afternoon.
  • The bura comes from the mainland in gusts and is strongest in the channels; when it is forecast, stay in the sheltered coves near Milna.
  • The jugo raises waves on the south side of Brač and in the Hvar Channel, so the route to Bol and the Pakleni Islands is then postponed.
  • The season runs from May to October. June and September have warm sea and fewer boats in the coves, and for July and August book earlier.
