Boat Rental Fano — 2027 Guide: San Bartolo Cliffs, Sailing and Tours from €350

Fano is the Roman Fanum Fortunae, where the Via Flaminia reached the Adriatic: a town of about 60,000 people in the Marche region, with the 1st-century Arch of Augustus and one of the busiest fishing harbours of the central Adriatic. The coast here is low and sandy, the sea shallow and warm, and only a few miles to the north rise the cliffs of the Monte San Bartolo park, the only high coastal headland between the Conero and Trieste. This guide explains where boats in Fano depart from, where to head north and south, how the winds behave here and what trips cost in our listings.

Fano harbour and Marina dei Cesari

Fano harbour is a canal port at a river mouth, with a fishing section where trawlers and clam boats tie up and the Marina dei Cesari leisure port. On one side of the harbour stretches the sandy Lido beach, on the other the pebbly Sassonia, and along the coast to the south stone breakwaters run parallel to the beach. The harbour entrance tends to silt up and is dredged from time to time, so leaving and entering with a local skipper is the easiest option. Our trips depart from Fano or from neighbouring Pesaro. See the Fano location page.

North: Pesaro and the San Bartolo cliffs

The most beautiful route from Fano leads northwest, towards Pesaro and the San Bartolo park:

  • Pesaro (about 6 NM, half an hour to 40 minutes under way): Rossini's town, with a seafront promenade and Arnaldo Pomodoro's large Sfera Grande sculpture by the sea. See boats in Pesaro.
  • Baia Flaminia (about 7 NM): the bay just north of Pesaro harbour, at the foot of the hill, with calmer water when the scirocco blows.
  • Monte San Bartolo cliffs (about 8–11 NM): steep clay and sandstone cliffs, covered in woodland, with pebble beaches below the villages of Fiorenzuola di Focara and Casteldimezzo. Most of these beaches can only be reached on foot by steep paths, so they are quietest from the sea.
  • Vallugola and Gabicce (about 13 NM): a small harbour and cove at the northern end of the park, with Gabicce Monte above it, from where the view stretches all the way to Rimini.

Do not anchor or swim right next to the rock below the cliffs, as the coast is collapsing.

South: the Metauro, Marotta and Senigallia

South of Fano the coast is flat, with long beaches and a shallow sandy seabed:

  • Mouth of the Metauro (about 1 NM): the river beside which the battle of 207 BC was fought in which Hasdrubal, Hannibal's brother, was killed.
  • Torrette and Marotta (about 3–7 NM): family beaches with breakwaters and calm water behind them.
  • Senigallia (about 12 NM, one to one and a half hours under way): a canal harbour and a long beach of fine sand. See boats in Senigallia.

Fishing and sunset

Fano lives from the sea: early in the morning the trawlers return with their catch, and the town is known for brodetto alla fanese, a fish stew with tomato and vinegar, cooked in the restaurants by the harbour. Out at sea, watch for shellfish farms marked with buoys.

On the Italian side of the Adriatic the sun sets behind the land, and in summer in the northwest, behind the San Bartolo ridge. That is why an evening cruise off Fano and Pesaro is at its best in the last hour of the day, when the cliffs darken against a golden sky and the coast lights up. The Boat & Drink trips suit this best.

Shallow sea and winds

The sea off Fano stays shallow far from the shore, with a sandy bottom that is easy to anchor in, and thanks to the low depth it warms up quickly. In summer boats must stay at least 200 m from sandy beaches and may approach the shore only slowly, through marked corridors.

  • Bora (northeast), known from the Croatian side of the Adriatic, blows onshore here and within a few hours raises short, steep waves.
  • Scirocco (southeast), known in Croatia as jugo, brings longer waves and cloudier weather; Baia Flaminia is more sheltered then.
  • Garbino (southwest), a warm wind from the Apennines, blows off the land and pushes boats out to sea even when the water by the shore is calm.
  • On calm summer days the sea is smooth in the morning, and in the afternoon a sea breeze picks up.

When to come

The season runs from June to September, and the sea is about 25 °C in August. June and September are calmer, with fewer boats at the anchorages below San Bartolo. In August, especially around 15 August, book ahead.
