Rovinj is the most beautiful starting point for exploring Istria's west coast by boat — from the town harbor to the first coves of Zlatni rt is less than 15 minutes by sea. Colorful old-town rooftops, the Church of St. Euphemia atop the peninsula, and a dozen uninhabited islets make Rovinj an ideal base for day trips, whether you rent a boat yourself or with a skipper.

Zlatni rt and Crveni otok — the closest coves

The Zlatni rt (Punta Corrente) forest park offers a series of rocky coves with pine trees reaching right down to the shore — perfect for anchoring for a few hours of swimming. Crveni otok (St. Catherine and St. Andrew islands), just about 10 minutes from the harbor, offers calmer beaches and fewer crowds than the town waterfront in summer.

A trip to Limski Canal

Limski Canal, a 10-kilometer fjord-like inlet north of Rovinj, is known for its oyster and mussel farms and steep limestone cliffs up to 100 meters high. The trip from Rovinj to the mouth of the canal takes about 30-40 minutes; speed and anchoring restrictions apply inside the canal, so it's worth checking the current rules with your rental provider beforehand.

The Rovinj archipelago — islets to explore

Around Rovinj there are as many as 14 islets and reefs — Figarola, Sveti Ivan na Pučini, and the Bijele and Crvene rocks — many of which are uninhabited and rarely visited.
