Senj, a town on the northern Adriatic known for the strongest bura wind on the Croatian coast, was for centuries home to the Uskoks — warriors and pirates who controlled shipping through the Velebit Channel from here. That turbulent history left the town a fortress that still dominates the skyline, and today boats depart Senj directly toward Krk and Rab.

Nehaj Fortress and the channel view

Nehaj Fortress, built in 1558 above the town, was constructed specifically to defend against Ottoman attacks and monitor shipping through the Senj Gate strait. From the sea, the fortress is visible from afar as a distinctive landmark, and from its walls the view spans the entire Velebit Channel toward Krk and Rab.

The Uskok legacy

The Uskoks were Senj's 16th- and 17th-century warriors and pirates who used small, fast boats to defy both Ottoman and Venetian fleets. Their tactics of swift raids from hidden coves are still recognized today in Senj's street names and town museum, while sailing the same waters is now a calm experience free of any of that danger.

The bura wind and when to sail

Senj is officially the windiest town in Croatia for the bura, a cold, sudden northeasterly wind that can gust over 200 km/h in winter storms. In summer the bura is rarer and weaker, making June through September the most reliable period for calm sailing, with a weather check always recommended before departure.

Reaching Krk and Rab from Senj

From Senj's harbor, the southern part of Krk island is under an hour away by boat, and Rab is just a bit further south. This route is one of the shortest mainland connections to both islands, making Senj a practical starting point for exploring Kvarner.
