Campervan Hire Samobor — 2027 Guide: Bled and Bohinj, Piran, Istria and Gorski Kotar
Samobor is a small baroque town about 25 km west of Zagreb, on the edge of the Samobor Hills. For a campervan trip heading west it is hard to find a handier starting point: the town is on the A3 motorway, and the Bregana–Obrežje border crossing, where the Slovenian A2 motorway continues to Ljubljana, is about 7 km away. Pick-up is between 10:00 and 14:00, so you can be in Ljubljana the same afternoon or at Bled by evening. This guide covers routes to Slovenia, Gorski Kotar, Kvarner and Istria; for Zagreb, Zagorje and Varaždin see our Zagreb campervan hire guide.
Before you set off: Samobor
The centre of town is King Tomislav Square, and above it, on a wooded hill, stand the ruins of Samobor Old Castle. Samobor is known for its custard slices (kremšnite), and north-west of the town begins the Žumberak – Samobor Hills Nature Park. The roads through the Žumberak villages are narrow and winding, and since the park lies right next to the pick-up point, it suits the first or last day of the rental.
Slovenia: Ljubljana, Bled and Bohinj
- Vignette. Slovenian motorways and expressways are not paid at toll booths but with an electronic vignette, bought online and linked to the number plate. Buy it before Bregana.
- Ljubljana (about 120 km, about 1 h 20 min): the old centre along the Ljubljanica river is largely a pedestrian zone, so leave the campervan at the campsite on the northern edge of the city and take the bus into the centre.
- Bled (about 55 km from Ljubljana, about 45 min; from Samobor about 175 km and 2 hours): a lake with an islet and a church reached by wooden pletna boats, and a castle on a cliff above the water. The campsite is at the western end of the lake, and the Vintgar gorge a few kilometres to the north.
- Bohinj (about 26 km from Bled, about 30 min): a larger, quieter lake in Triglav National Park, with the Savica waterfall and the cable car up to Vogel.
- Overnight stays. As in Croatia, camping outside campsites is not allowed in Slovenia. Many towns have designated motorhome stopovers with water and waste disposal.
Primorska and Istria: Postojna, Piran, Motovun
From Ljubljana the motorway runs towards the sea past Postojna (about 55 km), known for Postojna Cave, and the Škocjan Caves near Divača, which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Piran is about 125 km from Ljubljana: vehicles do not enter the old town, so leave the campervan at a campsite nearby and take the bus into town. See the Piran campervan page.
From Piran the Croatian border is about 15 km away, and Motovun, a hilltop town above the Mirna valley, about 60 km and an hour's drive. Rovinj is a further 40 km or so from there.
Kvarner and Gorski Kotar
- Opatija and Rijeka: about 60 km from Motovun and about 85 km from Rovinj, through the Učka tunnel, which is tolled. See the campervan pages for Opatija and Rijeka. The bridge to Krk is about 30 km from Rijeka.
- Gorski Kotar: from Rijeka the A6 motorway takes you about 40 km to Fužine with Lake Bajer and Vrelo Cave, and Risnjak National Park is close by. Even in summer it is cooler here than on the coast. From Samobor to Delnice is about 130 km and 1 h 30 min, so Gorski Kotar also works for a short trip of two or three days.
- Bora wind. On the A6 through Gorski Kotar, a strong bora occasionally closes the motorway to high-sided vehicles, including campervans.
Routes from Samobor
- Slovenia in 4 days (about 400 km): Samobor – Ljubljana – Bled – Bohinj – Samobor.
- Grand loop in 8–9 days (about 800 km): Samobor – Bled (175 km) – Bohinj (26 km) – Postojna and Piran (about 210 km) – Motovun (60 km) – Rovinj (40 km) – Opatija (85 km) – Fužine (40 km) – Samobor (about 145 km).
- Plitvice and the coast in 4–5 days (about 480 km): Samobor – Plitvice Lakes (about 140 km) – via Otočac to Senj (about 90 km) – along the coast to Rijeka (about 65 km) – Fužine (40 km) – Samobor (about 145 km). See the Plitvice Lakes campervan page.
With 275 km included per day, an eight-day rental includes 2,200 km, so even the grand loop stays well below the limit.
When to go
From April to June and in September and October most campsites are open, and Bled, Piran and Plitvice are less crowded. In July and August, book campsites at Bled, Bohinj and on the Istrian coast in advance. In Slovenia winter equipment is mandatory from 15 November to 15 March.
