Boat Hire in Makarska — 2027 Guide: Prices, the Islands of Brač and Hvar and Trips from Makarska Harbour
Makarska is one of the easiest places on the Adriatic to start sailing: the harbour is in the middle of town, Biokovo rises behind it, and the islands of Brač and Hvar lie across the channel. This guide is about hiring a boat in Makarska itself: what you can rent, roughly what it costs, where to go and what to watch for. The coves along the coast are covered in our separate piece, Sailing below Biokovo.
What we offer in Makarska
The Makarska page currently lists more than twenty boats and three trips. Prices are in euros and mean "from"; the owner confirms the exact amount for your date after an enquiry.
- A small boat for a day along the coast: Betina 500, 5 m, 10 hp engine, up to 5 people, from €190 a day, no skipper.
- A fast speedboat for the islands: Quicksilver 675 Open, 6.75 m, 150 hp engine, up to 9 people, €400 a day or €280 for half a day; a skipper can be added.
- A bigger group: Atlantic 750 Open, 7.7 m, up to 12 people, €400 a day.
- A large motor yacht: Rodman 1250 Fischer Pro, 13.4 m, up to 10 people, €900 a day, and Colnago 38 OPEN, 11.6 m, up to 12 people, €1,100 a day with a skipper.
If you would rather not drive the boat yourself, three trips leave from Makarska harbour:
- Golden Tour — Brač and Hvar: a full day, 9:00 to 18:00, up to 10 people, from €800 per group.
- 3 Islands Half-Day Tour (Hvar and Zečevo): 9:00 to 14:00, from €80 per person; skipper, fuel, snorkelling and drinks are included.
- Sunset Speedboat Tour (Brač Island): 18:30 to 20:00, from €40 per person.
Where to go
- Along the Makarska Riviera coast. Below Biokovo, pebble beaches alternate with pine forest; even a small boat is enough. Specific coves are described in our guide to the coves.
- Brač. Across the channel is Bol with Zlatni Rat, which has its own article. A bigger speedboat suits the crossing better than the smallest boat.
- Hvar and Zečevo. The half-day tour visits Hvar and the islet of Zečevo, a good option if you do not want to plan the route yourself.
- Sunset. The short evening tour around Brač is the cheapest way to see the sea from a different angle.
Rules and tips
- Licence and skipper. Driving a more powerful boat requires the appropriate licence; if you do not have one, many boats offer a skipper. The conditions for each boat are in the listing and the owner confirms them.
- Who pays for what. Fuel, skipper and equipment differ from boat to boat, so check what is included in the listing before you enquire.
- Booking. Boats are on request: send an enquiry and the owner confirms the date. A date is not free until the owner has confirmed it.
- Bora and jugo. The channel between the mainland and the islands can get rough when strong winds blow. Follow the forecast and the owner's instructions; the sea is usually calmer in the morning.
Season
- June and September are pleasant months with warm sea and fewer crowds.
- July and August are the most popular, so boats and trips fill up earlier.
- May and October are possible, but the sea is cooler and the weather less settled.
