Boat Hire in Málaga — 2027 Guide: Costa del Sol, Nerja, the Maro Cliffs and Dolphins
Málaga is the capital of the Costa del Sol and has more than 300 days of sunshine a year, which makes the sea here inviting for most of the year. From the port, next to the Muelle Uno promenade, boats sail into the bay below the Gibralfaro castle and the cathedral, westwards along the resorts to Marbella and eastwards to Nerja and the cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo. Dolphins are regular visitors. This guide explains where you can go by boat from Málaga, what to watch out for and when the sea is at its best.
What we currently offer

Where you can go from Málaga
- The bay at sunset (1 to 2 hours): the classic short trip from the port, with views of the Alcazaba, Gibralfaro, the cathedral and La Malagueta beach as the sun goes down behind the mountains.
- West along the Costa del Sol: Torremolinos, Benalmádena with its large Puerto Marina (about 10 nautical miles), Fuengirola, and Marbella and Puerto Banús (about 30 nautical miles). See also our Marbella location page.
- East towards Nerja: Rincón de la Victoria, the fishing port of Caleta de Vélez and Nerja (about 28 nautical miles), a white town on a cliff above small beaches.
- The Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs: a protected natural area between Nerja and La Herradura, with cliffs, waterfalls dropping into the sea and coves that are hard to reach from land. In places, access close to the shore is restricted to protect the seabed, so follow the markings and your skipper's instructions.
- Dolphins: common and bottlenose dolphins live in the bay and along the coast. Sightings are frequent but not guaranteed.
Rules and tips
- Licence. In Spain only small boats, up to about 5 metres and 15 hp, may generally be driven without a licence, in daylight and close to the coast. For anything larger you need a Spanish or recognised licence, or a skipper.
- Dolphin watching. It is regulated: the boat keeps its distance, approaches slowly and from the side, does not chase the animals and does not stay with them for long. Swimming with dolphins is not allowed.
- Swimming zones. In summer the buoyed bathing areas along the beaches are closed to boats; use the marked access channels and slow down near the shore.
- Harbours. The port of Málaga, Benalmádena and Marbella are busy in July and August, so arrange your mooring in advance.
Season and weather
- May to October is the main season: warm days and a pleasant sea.
- July and August are hot and busy; go out early in the morning or take a sunset trip.
- Winter is mild and boat trips run most of the year, but swell and wind are more frequent.
- Wind. The levante from the east and the poniente from the west can raise waves along the coast, and in summer the terral, a hot, dry wind from inland, sometimes blows towards the sea. The skipper uses the forecast to choose the calmer stretch of coast.
