Boat Rental Playa Blanca, Lanzarote — 2027 Guide: Papagayo Beaches from the Sea, Isla de Lobos and Dolphins
Playa Blanca is the southernmost resort on Lanzarote, set on a headland facing Fuerteventura. Only La Bocaina strait separates it from the neighbouring island, so from Playa Blanca a single boat trip can take in both the island's finest beaches and the other island across the channel. The south is also the most sheltered part of otherwise windy Lanzarote: the trade wind blows from the north-east, and the coast around Playa Blanca lies in its lee. This guide explains where you can sail from Playa Blanca, what you see from the sea and how much a trip costs.
Harbours in Playa Blanca
Playa Blanca has two harbours. Ferries to Corralejo on Fuerteventura dock at the town port, and east of the centre lies Marina Rubicón, a yacht harbour surrounded by a promenade, restaurants and shops. Lanzarote airport is about 35 km away, half an hour's drive. See all boats in this part of the island on the Playa Blanca location page.
Routes from the sea
- Papagayo beaches (about 2–3 nautical miles, half an hour's sailing). East of Playa Blanca lies a string of sandy coves: Playa Mujeres, Playa del Pozo, Playa de la Cera, Playa del Papagayo and Caleta del Congrio. The sand is golden, the coves are framed by dark volcanic cliffs, and the water in them is sheltered and clear. By land they are reached on a dirt road through a protected area, while by boat you simply anchor off the cove and jump into the sea. This is the shortest and calmest route, good for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and SUP.
- Los Ajaches. Above the Papagayo beaches rise the hills of Los Ajaches, one of the oldest volcanic massifs on the island, carved by erosion into brown and reddish gullies. The whole area is protected as a natural monument, so the coast there is free of buildings.
- La Bocaina strait, Isla de Lobos and Corralejo (about 5–6 nautical miles, about an hour). Across the channel lies Isla de Lobos, a small uninhabited island off the north of Fuerteventura, with a volcanic cone, La Concha beach and clear water for snorkelling. The island is a natural park, and walking on it requires a free advance permit from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura. Beyond Lobos, on the coast of Fuerteventura, you can see Corralejo and its white dunes. The sea in the channel is more open than off Papagayo and the wind there can pick up, so this route is chosen according to sea conditions on the day.
- Dolphins. Dolphins are sometimes seen in La Bocaina strait. An encounter is not guaranteed, and watching them is regulated: the boat keeps its distance, approaches slowly and does not chase the animals, and swimming with them is not allowed.
- Volcanic coast to the west. West of Playa Blanca, past the Pechiguera lighthouse, the coast turns north towards the black lava of Timanfaya, Los Hervideros and El Golfo. That side is open to Atlantic swell, so it is visited from the sea only when the sea is calm.
The F40 catamaran in Playa Blanca
In Playa Blanca we offer the F40 catamaran for up to 12 people, always with a skipper. The trips are sailed, and the skipper is a regatta sailor with more than 40 years of experience.
- Price: €135 per hour for the whole catamaran, up to 12 people. A three-hour trip costs €405 and a four-hour trip €540.
- Included: skipper, snorkelling gear, kayak and SUP board.
- Not included: food and drinks.
- Routes: the Papagayo beaches and Isla de Lobos, depending on the weather, and sometimes dolphins are seen along the way.
Do you need a licence
In Spain, without a licence you may generally only drive a small boat, up to about 5 metres and 15 hp, in daylight and close to the shore. The F40 catamaran is rented with a skipper, so you do not need a licence, and the skipper chooses the route according to the wind and swell in the channel.
Season, trade winds and the Atlantic
- All year round. Lanzarote has no winter break. In winter the daytime air temperature is around 20 °C, the sea does not drop below about 18 °C, and in summer it reaches about 23 °C.
- Winter is the main season for guests from northern Europe; around Christmas, New Year and Easter, book ahead.
- The trade wind blows from the north-east, strongest in summer, especially in July and August. The south of the island is in its lee, but in La Bocaina strait the wind and waves build, and the sea is usually calmest in the morning.
- Atlantic swell arrives even when the wind is light: the big winter swells from the Atlantic hit mainly the north and west coasts, while the south coast around Papagayo is the most sheltered.
- Calima, dust from the Sahara, sometimes reduces visibility for a few days.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a catamaran trip from Playa Blanca cost?
The F40 catamaran costs €135 per hour for the whole boat and up to 12 people, with a skipper, snorkelling gear, a kayak and a SUP board. A three-hour trip therefore costs €405 and four hours €540. Food and drinks are not included.
Where do boat trips in Playa Blanca depart from?
From Playa Blanca at the very south of Lanzarote, about 35 km and half an hour's drive from the airport. From there the Papagayo beaches are about half an hour away by sea, and Isla de Lobos, across La Bocaina strait, about an hour.
Do I need a licence to drive the boat?
No. The F40 catamaran is rented with a skipper included in the price, a regatta sailor with more than 40 years of experience, so you simply enjoy the sailing and swimming.
When is the season and what should I bring?
Trips run all year round; winter is the main season for guests from northern Europe, and even then the sea does not drop below about 18 °C. Food and drinks are not included in the price, so bring your own, and for the channel crossing also bring a light windbreaker, because the trade wind feels noticeably cool on open water.
