Boat rental in Trieste — Miramare, Sistiana, Duino, Grado, Piran and tips for 2027
Trieste lies at the top of the Adriatic, on a gulf framed by the white limestone cliffs of the Karst, with Slovenia and Croatian Istria just across the water. By boat you can reach the castle of Miramare and its marine reserve, the cliffs and coves of Sistiana and Duino, the Venetian town of Muggia, the lagoon island of Grado and, across the border, the harbours of Koper and Piran. This guide explains where you can go by boat, which rules apply and when it is best to head out.
What we currently offer
To be clear: no boats or trips are currently published for Trieste on the location page, which is why this guide does not give prices. If you would like a boat in Trieste, send us a request via the contact page and we will see what can be arranged.
Where the boats leave from
Boats leave from the marinas on the city waterfront, from the small harbours at Barcola and Grignano near Miramare, from the bay of Sistiana with its marina at Portopiccolo, and from Porto San Rocco in Muggia, on the southern side of the gulf. See also the pages boats in Muggia and boats in Grado.
Where to go
- Barcola and Miramare (about 4 nautical miles): the long seafront promenade where the people of Trieste swim, and the white castle of Miramare on its promontory. The sea around it is the Miramare marine protected area, where anchoring, fishing and navigation are restricted.
- Sistiana and Duino (about 10–12 nautical miles): a sheltered bay with clear water beneath the Karst cliffs, and the castle of Duino above the sea, with the Rilke path along the clifftop.
- Muggia (about 3 nautical miles): a small Venetian-style harbour town across the bay, good for lunch by the water.
- Grado (about 20 nautical miles west): the "island of the sun", with long sandy beaches and a lagoon full of small islands and fishermen's huts.
- Slovenia and Istria (about 8–20 nautical miles): Koper, Izola and Venetian Piran on the Slovenian coast, and further south the Croatian harbour of Umag. See the page boats in Piran.

Rules and tips
- Licence. Without a licence you may drive a boat up to 10 m with an engine of up to about 40 hp, within 6 nautical miles of the coast. For anything bigger you need a licence or a skipper.
- Bora. Check the forecast every day. The bora can rise within minutes, with violent gusts and steep, short waves; when a warning is issued, stay in port.
- Port traffic. Trieste is a major commercial port with ferries, container ships and tankers. Keep clear of the shipping lanes and port areas.
- Marine reserve. In the Miramare protected area, anchoring and fishing are not allowed, and access to parts of the reserve is restricted.
- Swimming zones. In summer, bathing areas are marked out, usually 200 m from sandy beaches and 100 m from rocky coasts; boats may only cross them slowly through marked corridors.
- Crossing the border. Slovenia and Croatia are in the EU and the Schengen area, but each has its own rules for boats. Check with your operator before crossing, and carry ID.
Season and weather
- June to September is the main season: warm sea, around 24–25 °C in August, and long days. May and late September are quieter and pleasant.
- Wind. In summer, a gentle sea breeze usually picks up in the afternoon. The bora from the north-east is the wind to watch: most frequent from autumn to spring, but possible at any time of year.
- Barcolana. On the second Sunday in October, up to two thousand sailing boats gather in the gulf for the Barcolana regatta; the bay is busy and parts of it are closed to other traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a licence to rent a boat in Trieste?
In Italy you can drive a boat up to 10 metres with an engine of up to about 40 hp without a licence, but only within 6 nautical miles of the coast. Larger or more powerful boats need a licence or a skipper; the operator will tell you which boats you can take yourself.
What is the bora and why does it matter?
The bora is a cold north-easterly wind that sweeps down from the Karst onto the Gulf of Trieste, with gusts that can exceed 100 km/h. It is most common from autumn to spring but can also arrive in summer, often suddenly, so always check the forecast and stay in port when a bora warning is issued.
Can I sail from Trieste to Slovenia or Croatia?
Yes, Slovenian Koper and Piran are only about 8–13 nautical miles away and Croatian Umag about 20. Slovenia and Croatia have their own rules for boats and skippers, and Croatia charges certain fees for foreign boats, so check with your operator before crossing the sea border and carry your ID.
When is the best time for a boat trip in Trieste?
The season runs from June to September, with the warmest sea (around 24–25 °C) in August. May and late September are quieter. On the second Sunday in October, the Barcolana regatta fills the gulf with up to two thousand sailing boats, one of the largest regattas in the world.
