Boat Hire in Stari Grad on Hvar — 2027 Guide: Prices, Coves and the Pakleni Islands
Stari Grad is one of the oldest towns on the Adriatic: Greek settlers founded it long before Rome, and today it is a quiet harbour on a long, sheltered bay on the north side of the island of Hvar. It makes a good base for sailing because the bay is protected and the island's shores are full of small coves. This guide is about hiring a boat in Stari Grad itself: what you can rent, roughly what it costs, where to go and what to watch for. Hvar town and the Pakleni Islands are covered in our guide Boat hire in Hvar.

Where to go
- Stari Grad bay. The long, sheltered bay suits the first hours on the water and small boats.
- The coast of Hvar. The north and south shores of the island have small coves and sand and pebble beaches; a speedboat is enough for a day trip.
- The Pakleni Islands. According to the listings, the speedboats from Stari Grad suit a trip to the Pakleni Islands; more about the area in the guide Boat hire in Hvar and the piece on the Blue Cave and the Pakleni Islands.
- A view of the town. The old town and the Stari Grad Plain look different from the sea than from land; the plain is a UNESCO-protected landscape.
Rules and tips
- Licence and skipper. Driving a speedboat requires the appropriate licence, and all boats also offer a skipper. The conditions are in each boat's listing and the owner confirms them.
- Fuel. Fuel is charged separately by consumption, so include it in your budget.
- Booking. Boats are on request: send an enquiry and the owner confirms the date. A date is not free until the owner has confirmed it.
- Bora and jugo. The Hvar channel and open waters can get rough when strong winds blow. Follow the forecast and the owner's instructions; the sea is usually calmer in the morning.
Season
- June and September are pleasant months with warm sea and fewer crowds.
- July and August are the most popular, so boats fill up earlier.
- May and October are possible, but the sea is cooler and the weather less settled.
