Boat Hire in Melbourne — 2027 Guide: the Yarra River, Port Phillip Bay, Fishing and Licence-Free Party Boats

Melbourne is more of a water city than it first appears. The Yarra River runs straight through the business district, under a string of bridges and along the Southbank promenades, and at its mouth opens Port Phillip Bay, a shallow inland sea bigger than many lakes, with Williamstown, St Kilda and beaches all the way to the Mornington Peninsula. A boat here is not just for sightseeing: Melburnians celebrate birthdays on the water, host work functions, fish for snapper and see in the New Year with the fireworks over the city. This guide explains which boats you can hire, where to take them, what they cost and what you need to know about licences and weather.

Where trips start

The boats we offer on the Melbourne page come from a single operator, Boat4Hire, and the self-drive party boats leave from Docklands, the newer city district built on the old port, which is equally close to the city centre by river and to the bay. The exact boarding point for the yachts and fishing boats is confirmed at booking and shown in the listing.

Main routes

  • Up the Yarra through the city (1 to 2 hours). From Docklands you head upstream through the centre, under the bridges, past Southbank and the towers of the CBD, as far as Herring Island, a small island park in the middle of the river. The river stays calm in almost any weather, which makes it the safest choice for a first trip and for families.
  • Port Phillip Bay. Downstream, under the Bolte Bridge, the river opens into the bay. From there you see the city skyline from the water, and shorter trips head towards Williamstown and its old harbour or along the shore towards St Kilda. The Mornington Peninsula, with the beaches of Sorrento and Portsea at the southern end of the bay, is too far for a trip of a few hours; ask the owner of a larger yacht about a longer charter.
  • Fishing in the bay. Port Phillip is known for snapper, best in spring and early summer, roughly from October to December. The fishing boats come with rods, bait and a fish finder.
  • Evening cruises and New Year's Eve. In summer, sunset over the bay is the most popular slot for party boats, and there are special New Year's Eve packages with a view of the city fireworks from the water.

Boat types and how to choose

  • Self-drive party boats (up to 12 people). The Spaceship pontoon boat has a flat deck, a Bluetooth sound system and room for a barbecue and an esky, and you bring your own food and drinks. Before departure you get a short safety briefing and then drive the boat yourself. The fleet has several identical boats, so larger groups can cruise together.
  • Fishing boats (5 to 10 people). A fleet of Polycraft boats with 100 hp Honda engines, each with a fish finder; rods and bait (squid or pilchards) are included. Hire is by the hour, half day (4 hours) or full day (8 hours).
  • Private yachts with a skipper. VooDoo takes up to 12 and HQ up to 24 guests. Both always run with a professional skipper, have a sound system and come with an event coordinator for every charter. You can bring your own food and drinks or order catering. A good choice for birthdays, bucks and hens parties and work functions.

Prices, licences and rules

  • Self-drive party boat. One hour costs 175 AUD, two hours 199 AUD for 1 to 5 people or 299 AUD for 6 to 12 people, and a half day (4 hours) 375 AUD for up to 6 people or 520 to 525 AUD for 7 to 12 people. The same boat can also be hired with a skipper, from 500 AUD for a minimum of two hours.
  • Fishing boats. The largest boat (up to 10 people) costs 120 AUD an hour with a two-hour minimum, 338 AUD for a half day and 520 AUD for a full day. The boat for up to 8 people costs 120 AUD an hour, 310 AUD for a half day and 520 AUD for a full day, and the smallest, for up to 5 people, 90 AUD an hour and 250 AUD for a half day.
  • Skippered yachts. VooDoo starts from 650 AUD and HQ from 900 AUD; the exact duration included is confirmed with the owner. The New Year's Eve package on HQ (4 hours, 8:30 pm to 12:30 am) is 4,500 AUD for up to 24 guests.
  • Boat licence. In Victoria you generally need a recreational marine licence to operate a powered vessel, but hire operators may let unlicensed guests drive after a safety briefing before departure. That is how the party boats and fishing boats on our site work; on the yachts no licence is needed because the skipper drives.
  • Fishing licence. Fishing in Victoria generally requires a recreational fishing licence, with exemptions, for example for under-18s. You buy it online before you go; ask the owner if you are unsure.
  • Alcohol. On skippered yachts you can drink, but whoever drives a self-drive boat must not be under the influence; in Victoria the same limit generally applies to boat operators as to car drivers.

Season, weather and time of day

  • Summer is the main season. From December to March it is warmest, the days are long and slots are hardest to get, especially at weekends and around the holidays. Spring is snapper season, and winter (June to August) is cold, but river cruises still run.
  • The weather changes quickly. Melbourne is known for changeable weather. In summer a hot day can end with a sudden southerly change, bringing strong wind and a drop in temperature, and because the bay is shallow, short, steep waves build quickly. Check the forecast before heading into the bay and follow the operator's advice.
  • Mornings are calmer. The sea breeze usually builds in the afternoon, so the bay is calmest in the morning, and early morning is best for fishing anyway. The river is sheltered and calm for most of the day, which makes it a good alternative when the bay is windy.
