Boat Hire in Koper — 2027 Guide: the Slovenian Coast, Piran, Izola and Savudrija
The Slovenian coast is only a little over forty kilometres long, yet it holds a lot: medieval towns on headlands, salt pans, marinas and the calm sea of the Gulf of Trieste. Koper is its biggest town and the natural starting point for sailing to Izola, Piran and Portorož. This guide explains where you can go by boat from Koper, what to watch out for and when the sea is at its best.
What we currently offer
To be upfront: there are currently no published boats or trips for Koper or the rest of Slovenia on the location page, so this guide does not list prices. It is meant for guests who are planning a trip and want to see what awaits. If you want a boat on the Slovenian coast, send us an enquiry through the contact page and we will check what can be arranged.
Where you can go from Koper
- Izola. An old fishing town a few miles south-west of Koper, with a marina and a seafront promenade. A good destination for a swim and lunch.
- Piran and the Bay of Piran. The most photogenic stretch of coast: the old town on a narrow headland, Tartini Square and the harbour. Anchoring and access to the town depend on local rules, so ask your operator before you go.
- Portorož. A resort with a beach and a marina, suited to a longer stay on the water.
- Strunjan. A landscape park with a cliff above the sea, best seen from the water.
- Towards Savudrija. From the Bay of Piran you can carry on towards the Croatian coast and Savudrija, which means crossing a state border at sea. This requires valid documents and notification under the rules; check the conditions with your operator in advance.
Rules and tips
- Licences. Running a boat requires the appropriate licence, and the conditions depend on engine power and vessel length. The operator will tell you what is needed or offer a skipper.
- Border at sea. Slovenian, Croatian and Italian waters are close together, so always carry travel documents.
- Protected areas. Anchoring and swimming restrictions may apply in parks and near the salt pans.
Season and weather
- May to September is the main season: warm sea and settled days.
- The bora is a cold, strong north-easterly wind that can blow up suddenly in the Gulf of Trieste, especially outside summer. Follow the forecast and the operator's instructions.
- July and August bring the biggest crowds in the harbours; early mornings are calmer.
