Boat Hire in Cancún — 2027 Guide: Isla Mujeres, the MUSA Underwater Museum, Isla Contoy and the Sargassum Season
Cancún is known for its hotel zone on a narrow strip of land between the Caribbean and the Nichupté lagoon, but the real face of the city shows from the water. The sea is turquoise and warm, and a few minutes of sailing lead to islands, reefs and shallow sandy bays. A boat in Cancún is a way to escape the crowds on the beach. This guide explains where you can go by boat, which rules apply in Mexican waters and when the best time to sail is.
What we currently offer
To be upfront: there are currently no published boats or trips for Cancún or the rest of Mexico on the location page, so this guide does not list prices. It is meant for guests who are planning a trip and want to see what awaits. If you want a boat in Cancún, send us an enquiry through the contact page and we will check what can be arranged.
Where you can go from Cancún
- Isla Mujeres and Playa Norte. The island north of Cancún, a short crossing away. Playa Norte is a shallow beach with calm, clear water, and boats anchor beside it for swimming. A good half-day destination.
- The MUSA underwater museum. Sculptures placed on the seabed, seen by snorkelling or from a glass-bottom vessel. It is tied in with protecting the reefs in that area.
- Punta Nizuc and the reefs. A protected marine area with a coral reef, good for snorkelling. Entry to protected areas may be charged.
- Isla Contoy. A national park about 30 kilometres from Isla Mujeres, known for its birds and unusually clear sea. Visitor numbers are capped at about 200 a day, and you reach the island only with licensed operators, so book the trip in advance.
- Nichupté lagoon. Calm water on the inner side of the hotel zone, suited to short outings and wave-free sunsets.
Rules and tips
- Captain. In Mexico, trips and hire are usually organised with a licensed operator and a captain. Check with the operator which permits they hold and what is included.
- Protected areas. National parks and marine areas may have fees, visitor limits and rules on sunscreen; biodegradable products are often required.
- Check the operator's instructions. Rules can change, especially around Isla Contoy.
Season and weather
- November to April is the dry season: pleasant temperatures, less rain and the least sargassum.
- Sargassum (seaweed carried by currents) appears mainly from spring to autumn, usually peaking in the summer months; it varies by year and by beach.
- June to November is hurricane season, peaking towards the end of summer; sailing depends on the forecast.
